China summons the US ambassador in response to Pelosi's visit to Taiwan

BEIJING: On Tuesday, China summoned the American ambassador to express its displeasure at her “egregious” travel to Taiwan. Pelosi’s travel to the democratic, self-governing island, which China views as a part of its territory, drew “strong complaints” from vice foreign minister Xie Feng.

China won’t watch helplessly, according to Xie, who was reported as stating, “The action is exceedingly flagrant in nature and the consequences are really serious.”As the most prominent elected US official to visit Taiwan in 25 years, Pelosi’s travel heightened tensions between the two largest economies in the world, with Beijing viewing it as a serious provocation.

The United States “must pay the price for its own sins,” according to Xie, who also asked the country to “quickly confront its wrongdoings and take meaningful efforts to undo the negative impacts created by Pelosi’s travel to Taiwan.”

Pelosi arrived in Taiwan late on Tuesday, defying Beijing’s repeated stern threats. Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan is reportedly opposed by the Biden administration, but White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby stated in Washington that she was free to travel wherever she wished.
