WASHINGTON: According to chemists in China and the United States, “forever chemicals” used in everyday things like nonstick cookware may now be broken down using low temperatures and simple reagents.

Due to their toxicity and great resistance to decomposition as waste products, these contaminating substances have long been associated with major health problems.Possibly providing a remedy for a persistent cause of harm to people, animals, and the environment.

Senior author William Dichtel of Northwestern University told reporters at a news conference, “It really is why I conduct research — so that I might have a beneficial impact on the world. As a result of industrial activities and landfill leaching, contaminants have accumulated over time in the environment, entering the air, soil, groundwater, lakes, and rivers.

Even modest levels of chronic exposure have been related to liver damage, high cholesterol, weakened immune systems, low birth weights, and various cancers.
