Author Salman Rushdie was stabbed on stage in western New York on Friday; the culprit in the crime has been identified as a 24-year-old Fairview, New Jersey man.Police identified the attacker as 24-year-old Hadi Matar in a news release that was released some hours after the assault on the author of Indian descent.
According to Maj. Eugene Staniszewski of the New York State Police, Matar entered the room as Rushdie, 75, was getting ready to speak at a Chautauqua Institution literary event late in the morning and stabbed him at least twice, once in the neck and once in the stomach.
Staniszewski claims that following the assault, witnesses and security personnel surrounded Matar and tackled him. Later, while the panel discussion was going on, he was detained by a state police officer and a deputy from the neighbourhood sheriff’s office.
