ROME: According to authorities, an Italian guy who was stuck in a collapsed tunnel near the Vatican and had to be rescued was thought to be a member of a gang that was tunnelling its way to a neighbouring bank.

Firefighters had to spend eight hours digging him out of a road in Rome’s west before they could rescue him on Thursday night and take him to the hospital. Two individuals from Rome and two from Naples were detained for damaging public property, according to a police spokesman.

One of the two Romans who was saved is still being treated in the hospital, he said.He stated, “We are still looking into it; one of the ideas is that they are robbers.

However, the motivation was obvious to Italian tabloids, which noted that the tunnel was discovered next to a bank before the long weekend of August 15, when citizens often leave town and much of Rome is deserted.
