President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that the two operating reactors at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine lost power on Thursday, narrowly preventing a radioactive disaster.Fires in the ash pits of a coal power plant close to the complex, according to Energoatom, the state nuclear company of Ukraine, cut the reactors’ power supply.
The disconnect was attributed to Russian “invaders” by the corporation. Zelenskiy said backup diesel generators quickly stepped in to provide a steady power supply, corroborating earlier remarks made to Reuters by an energy official. The nuclear facility uses electricity for cooling and safety systems.
He stated in an evening address that “if the diesel generators had not started, if our station crew had not responded after the blackout, then we would have already been obliged to overcome the consequences of a radiation catastrophe.””Russia has positioned Ukraine and all of Europe in a scenario where a radioactive calamity is just around the corner.”
Additionally, he urged other international organisations to move far more quickly to compel Russian forces to evacuate the area around the station, which is the biggest of its kind in Europe.
