Shaheen Chowk in Karachi’s broken sewage line repair will take longer

A sewer line that broke three days ago at Shaheen Complex Chowk in Karachi, the busiest business district on II Chundrigar Road, was not fixed by the city government. Administrator Karachi Murtaza Wahab said that the repairs started right away and went on nonstop the following day.

However, residents discovered that the workers were slow to repair the sewer pipe. In this key part of the city, five major highways’ traffic flow has been halted due to repair work.

On Saturday afternoon, a 66-inch diameter sewage main collapsed around 10 to 12 feet deep, causing gutters in nearby neighbourhoods such as Boulton Market, II Chundrigar Road, Kharadar, and Haqqani Chowk, and Civil Hospital to overflow.

A pit about 10 feet deep from the road was also showing a heavy flow of water from the sewer pipe. A sizable area surrounding Haqqani Chowk, where many Muharram processions and Majalis take place, is covered in sewage just before the first Islamic month of Muharram.
