KABUL: On Thursday, a suicide bomber killed a prominent Taliban preacher known for his fiery sermons against the extremist Islamic State (IS) group and support for female education at his madressah in Kabul.
Rahimullah Haqqani, who has recently openly advocated for girls’ schooling, had escaped at least two earlier assassination attempts, including one in Pakistan in October 2020.
“Sheikh Rahimullah’s madrassa was targeted today, and he and one of his brothers were martyred.”Bilal Karimi, a government spokesman, confirmed Haqqani’s death “in an attack carried out by a treacherous opponent,” but provided no other details.
