At least 41 people were killed in an Egyptian church fire triggered by an electrical problem

On Sunday, at least 41 people were murdered and 45 were injured in a fire caused by an electrical problem at a Coptic Christian church in the Egyptian city of Giza.

The fire broke out just before 9 a.m., when 5,000 people had gathered for Mass at the Abu Sifin church in the Imbaba neighbourhood, according to two security sources.According to them, the fire blocked an entry to the church, prompting a panic, and the majority of those killed were children.

“We saw smoke rising from the second floor and people congregating on the third and fourth floors.” “Then we heard a blast and sparks and fire coming out of the window,” he recalled, adding that he and his daughter had escaped on the ground level.

Electrical fires of this type are not uncommon in Egypt; in late 2020, a fire at a hospital treating Covid-19 patients killed at least seven people and injured many more.
