QUETTA: On Thursday, police detained Maulana Hidayatur Rehman, the leader of the Haq do Tehreek (HDT), in connection with several instances involving protests in the port city of Gwadar.
A courthouse in Balochistan was where Mr. Rehman and three other people, including Naseeb Nosherwani and Hassan Murad, were apprehended.
A lawsuit was filed against the HDT leaders, including Rehman, last month as a result of the death of a police officer during protests in Gwadar. According to a statement from the Balochistan police, policeman Yasir Saeed, who had been sent to protect the HDT, was killed after being shot by demonstrators of their sit-in.
The demonstrators wanted fewer checkpoints, better border trade, and a complete ban on deep-sea fish fishing in the water near Gwadar. During a protest near the Sarbandan neighbourhood of Gwadar, they had stopped the Coastal Highway.
